Mercedes Taunts Ferrari after Clinching F1 Constructors

Have you heard? Mercedes AMG Petronas wrapped up this year’s Formula 1 constructors’ championship this past Sunday with three races still left on the calendar. The folks at Scuderia Ferrari definitely heard about it, thanks to Mercedes parking a new C-class emblazoned with “World Champion 2014″ right outside the Italian team’s headquarters. Shots fired, sort of.

As is so often the case, this beef war sprang up on Twitter. Ferrari tweeted a “congrats, but don’t get comfy in that throne” message to Mercedes on Sunday. It took a few days for Mercedes to respond (via its Italian-language account), but the company’s retort was perfect.

For those who don’t speak Italian, that tweet reads “The best Ferrari ever built is the next one,” a quote attributed to Enzo Ferrari, the use of which can be read with considerable sarcasm when it comes from a competitor.

This was Mercedes AMG’s year in F1 so far: The team has won 13 out of the 16 races run thus far, with Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg finishing 1-2 at the Russian Grand Prix in Sochi to clinch the constructors’ title. It’s the first time Mercedes has won the constructors’ crown in F1—it previously powered McLaren and Brawn title winners—and it breaks Red Bull’s string of four consecutive championships. Ferrari currently sits in fourth place in the standings.
