Hyundai is considering a small sports car that would slot below the Genesis Coupe in the automaker’s lineup. Allan Rushforth, former Hyundai COO, told Autocar that there have been discussions about a small sports car. The new car, however, would not be a direct replacement for the discontinued Tiburon coupe.
“Cars like these, such as the Audi TT, create a huge demand when they’re new, but then that dies off quickly,” Rushforth told Autocar. “It’s about demographics, too. The buyers of the old Coupé (Tiburon in the U.S.) no longer want these cars.”
Hyundai Passocorto Concept Sketch If a small sports car were to materialize, it would likely align with one of Hyundai’s motorsports programs such as the World Rally Championship, and would probably come from the automaker’s upcoming N performance division. If such a car were to get approved, it would have to be a global model to justify its development.
Earlier this year Hyundai showed the PassoCorto concept at the Geneva auto show. That concept, which was designed by the Institute of Design in Turin as a design study, was said to be powered by a twin-turbo 1.6-liter I-4 making 262 hp. Rushforth was recently picked up by Nissan for the role of corporate vice president for Global Sales.
